For this action project our book bound class was in charge of creating things that would go into the new library to inspire current and future students to get excited about reading. Literacy is a huge issue in Chicago so many kids go to school without learning and we want to make sure that were school where reading is something that is very important and every student gets a chance to figure out what aspect of reading the love the most. For example one of the things that we created or posters that had facts about reading on them or an image interpreting a positive aspect of reading. We also got to create storyboard explaining our journey with reading and how he has impacted us as individuals this also allowed us to share some of the hardships of reading and what about it we struggled with. He also able to create our own literary journal based on a topic that we really cared about my group chose the topic of thanks.
Reading Story Board
For this assignment we created storyboards telling our experience with reading throughout the years. This assignment ties into the course very well because understanding a history of your own reading can help you improve your future with reading. I sucked this assignment because I'm very proud of it and it also allowed me to add a little bit of creative license when it came to creating the characters and their personalities. Some challenges I faced creating this project were all technological for a little while I didn't even know what my storyboard was, so I had to go back and make a whole
In. Something added to my storyboard was another cell describing how just simply going to the doctor and getting some contacts let me to even read simple things in my everyday life better for example signs and store labels. I'm so proud of this assignment because I'm also very proud of my story on how I became a better reader.
Literary Journal
For this assignment we are putting groups of four and asked to create a literary journal based on the topic you're passionate about my group chose thanks. Your summary relates to the course because literary journals are very important form of reading. I selected this assignment from AP blog because it shows my talents as a poet and it also debuts some of my best trying. I also really enjoyed this project because I got to do it with a group of people share the same interest as I did. I purchased assignment with the idea that I really had free reign over what I would like to do. So that inspired me to do what I was best at. The challenge I face with this was deadlines because in order to do it could trying it helps to have a lot of time but I still managed to make it. I revised some of the grammar in my poem because a few things are misspelled. I'm super proud of the fact that I got to show off my writing abilities to a different form of writing poetry.
Cannon Essay
For this assignment we were supposed to read the great Gatsby and analyze why it was on the literary canon. His son it relates to the course because the literary canon is a huge piece of our lives while we are in school, for example the literary canon holds the books that we are required to read throughout elementary and high school. I selected this assignment for myAP blog because I had really strong feelings about the requirements of the Canon who got to choose the books I got on the Canon and also how can we make the canon better. I approached this assignment with an open mind full of great ideas. My objective was to set out and challenge the ideas of the literary canon. I revised some of the spelling and grammatical errors in the essay to make it more official for publishing. I'm super proud of the fact that I was able to clearly execute my ideas and also challenge old ideas to bring in new ones especially when it came to gender, race and culture.
Final Cannon Essay
The Great Gatsby is an excellent well-written novel that describes the ideals of American society in the past, present, and potential future, earning it a high position in the literary canon. The literary canon is a list of books that are required to be read in school. Fitzgareld also fits the canon because the way he sets up his story and the crafting of the words. However there are some questions and issues of how Scott frames normalcy in the book, women are reliant on men's wealth and spend their lives chasing love instead of a career or their own wealth. Another issue that comes into play is that all the main characters that are successful are white males, in the story none of the women are successful by their own merit. The story also does not present people of color in a position of power, wealth or success and if this book is supposed to be explaining American ideals then that is wrong.
We live in one of the most diverse countries. Making it critical that the literary canon includes books that allow students of different religions, races and class backgrounds to read about one another's life styles and cultures, to help eliminate ignorance and judgment of one another in the future. The canon currently includes one book that is written by an african author. The problem with this is the cannon is large, teachers do not get around to exploring all of the books. If there is only one written by an African author there is a large group of students missing out on exploring writing that allows them to get a glimpse of the world through the eyes of an African author.
Books included in the literary canon are often written including overarching themes that are easy to relate to. The great Gatsby include the idea of how well can change a person or drive them to extremes to obtain it. The story also captures the theme of love and relationships, this is valid and relatable for a lot of young adult incoming readers the story is assigned to. The great Gatsby also tackles the theme of class and how they can change someone's perspective on there and others self-worth. Many books that have been chosen to be in the canon includes themes to the great Gatsby.
Timelessness is an important overarching theme that the books including the literary canon incorporate. This is such an important aspect to this book because Fitzgerald utilizes it so well. When talking about wealth he clearly outlines the power dynamics between men and women, which has been a timeless battle since the days of hunting and gathering. The women were told to stay at home and men were told to go off and fight. Another timeless element of the story is the way people of color are not featured in a position of power. Since people of color have been brought to this country we have been set up for a hard road to success. And back then it was not just hard it was next to impossible.
In conclusion the great Gatsby should definitely remain in the literary canon. But the literary canon should include a lot more authors from different countries, different races, and of different class backgrounds. An easy way to change this is to have the people who choose the books for the literary canon be more diverse. We can not just let the panel just be educated white males. Having more women on the panel that chooses books for the literary canon could help make the smallest difference. Incorporating other cultures into the literary canon is a small way we can eliminate ignorance in our youth therefore setting us up for a more successful future.
Reading Poster
For this assignment we were required to create a poster that inspired reading or shared facts about reading I ended up taking a more abstract route. I designed a picture that showed a brain being taken up and away into new lands by books that were also balloons. I select this assignment because it reflects on my creative side and my interpretations of reading. This assignment ties into the course because our course is called book bound and it was all around reading and how we can make a difference. The challenge I face of this assignment was that it was very tedious because doing a poster this pig takes a very long time. There's not much for me to revise about my image and the fact that the image posted on the blog is not the original it is a copy .
